We stayed at the Swiss for a long weekend in December, as a mini getaway for our anniversary. Sabrina is an incredible host! The rooms are clean and well appointed. We wanted to be close to the Market, and this location meant we could walk everywhere we needed to be. If you are interested in a boutique hotel, we highly recommend the Swiss!
For context, I stay there for 2 nights, business trip in December 2024. Also for context, a 5 star review for me is to get pretty close to perfection so I normally don’t give 5 stars.
The hotel is a boutique hotel with some 20+ rooms very well maintained, decorated and clean. It is not your typical hotel, maybe research “boutique hotel” to understand better but think about it as a hybrid version of a bed and breakfast and a hotel. It is a repurposed building from the 1870s so it has a lot or character.
Sabina, the owner was fantastic. She was working the front counter herself and was very helpful with anything I needed. Highly recommended if you are looking for a cozy and private stay in Ottawa for business.
First thing first: Sabrina is a wonderful person and a great owner/manager/host. Swiss Hotel is a boutique hotel in a great location and it provides guests with everything they need for a comfortable trip to Ottawa. I was going to mention to Sabrina about a couple of paint touch ups and an access panel in the bathroom ceiling but I forgot all about it. Needless to say that these small finishing touches didn’t impact my experience at the hotel. Swiss Hotel could go from 9.7 to 10.0 in my opinion should these small little things were addressed. All in all, I applaud and congratulate Sabrina for creating and managing a wonderful boutique hotel in the heart of the city.
Sabina was completely unprofessional when my colleague arrived at her hotel. Her complaint about Trudeau destroyed the economy because according to her the reservation was doubled. She co.plained about expedia also for their fees. After that she double charged my credit card saying that the second reservation we had, which was cancelled within the time allowed to cancel and only for 3 days…she charged penalties as it would be 6 day reservation!!!
If you are not happy with Expedia…pulled your hotel from the program. Don’t scam your guests inventing booking info to more money for your purpose. If you don’t like Canada …well……the world is big enough to find a better place for you, your family and your business.
Extremely rude and unprofessional. Upon arrival I tried to check in with my two friends, that I was under the impression I was getting a room with. We were greeted in the worst way by owner Christine who immediately snapped at us asking who was staying in the room. When I told her it would be the 3 of us in the room, she said that it was not a possibility, and that there was no way more than 2 people could be staying in the room. I calmly explained to her that the room I thought I was getting, had a king size bed and a sofa which would have been plenty of room for the 3 of us. After driving and hour and a half to this hotel, this is was not a very pleasant way to be welcomed after spending $220 on the room. Once, she reiterated that our room was not in fact the one I thought I booked rudely, she went to get another staff member who started yelling at me when I explained to her the room I thought I was getting. I was obviously frustrated but I tried my best to remain civil during the entire interaction, while I was being yelled at by said staff member. She only started to apologize after we said we were leaving, and we did not get any sort of refund. I’m not mad about the refund but I would have expected to at least be treated like a human being when we were simply trying to check in to our room that we paid for.
Awful service. Receptionist and “manager” were incredibly rude and unprofessional. Edit after the reply. We reviewed the booking and it was in fact a king bed that we originally booked. There was also no “informing” we were blatantly yelled at and told the hotel was “not a party room” even though all we had done was walk in and try to check in. You were discriminative of us based on our age. Next time I suggest you treat your customers with kindness as they walk in your doors instead of judging as soon as they walk in. We stayed polite the entire time. you also only apologized after we said we were leaving. I’m glad to know that you can stay all sweet where everyone else can see but when you were alone in your reception area with us you resulted to yelling. Sorry but we will not be returning. We drove an hour and a half to get to your hotel and you almost left us with nowhere to sleep for the night because you could not accommodate an extra person sleeping in the room. Might I also add that the next hotel that we found last minute didn’t even ask how many people that were staying with us. They fit us all in and we’re very accommodating despite the fact that we booked the same size room at the next hotel. Do better.
We were staying in the hotel for just one night. We were surprised to learn we were not authorized to eat in bed. I understand that any damage would be added to our bill, but to make it a policy is a bit much. As I’m used to having a full bed set (fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet cover), I was surprised to find the bed without a flat sheet. Since this is a hotel and we would be required to pay for allegedly stolen items, I went to the reception to ask if it was normal or if it had been forgotten (so I wouldn’t get charged later on). I was told rudely that no that’s how it is, and in Switzerland they don’t have that. I was asking a perfectly reasonable question. Before going to bed, we added the do not disturb sign on the door as we wanted to make sure no one would come in (it was a weekday) and checkout was set for 11h am. As there was no deadbolt lock on the door, I installed a portable door lock I carry when traveling to make sure nobody would come in while we were sleeping. It doesn’t damage anything and it’s very easy to install and take off. Well, next morning we were woken up by someone trying to come in a bit before 10h. Apparently it was house keeping…? We were glad I had installed the door lock. When leaving the room, the sign was still very much on the handle. In general, the room was nice and the bathroom was clean, but we didn’t really feel comfortable as we did at other places.
Just down the street from the University of Ottawa campus. My son just started his first year and I made a short visit to help him get settled in. Stayed at the Swiss Hotel. It’s a small independently owned and operated hotel with plenty of old world charm. The rooms are very nicely renovated and decorated. The room was perfectly clean and comfortable. Many rooms to choose from all with their own individual charm. It’s a very decent place to stay and I very much enjoyed my conversations with Sabina (owner) who is on site often. I highly recommend staying at this hotel and supporting local small business owners such as Sabina. Lots of restaurants to visit nearby, close to transit, parks, historical sites, the byway and the mall.
It is a beautiful Victorian style inn in the heart of downtown. Just a 7-minute walk from Byward market and Ottawa sign. It has lovely rooms, res and white themed (Canadian and Swiss style). Room service is great. They provide complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate and other beverages each morning. The hotel lobby has a beautiful sitting area designed by the owner and her family herself. The owner, Sabina is a delightful woman with a wonderful lively personality and great stories to share and ensures that you are well taken care of while in the hotel!
Definitely recommended and will stay here again during my next visit! ♥️
A beautiful hotel with Swiss theme make your stay romantic … Rooms are quiet and clean , larger than normal hotels room good for business meeting and etc … Only issues you need to consider : this hotel doesn’t have elevator and parking ?️ and they don’t serve breakfast. Easy to find public parking outside for 20-30$ per day… Great location for those want to do walking tour.
My stay at the Swiss Hotel was very pleasant. The room was very clean, quiet and comfortable, even though it was one of their smaller rooms. The staff were very friendly and made me feel welcome. It is located right downtown and within walking distance from multiple restaurants, Parliament grounds and entertainment. I will definitely plan another stay at the Swiss Hotel during my next stay in Ottawa.
This place is wonderful on the inside. The whole staff is so incredibly welcoming and helpful! The rooms were modern, clean, well-equipped(fireplace, mini fridge, hair dryer & iron, hair & body wash, Nespresso machine, robes, lots of towels), and the bed was fantastic(sheets and towels smelled so clean and were very soft). The only complaint inside is that, being an old building, there is no elevator. Now for the outside. Yikes. ? I wondered why, when we first arrived, you needed to push an intercom, be buzzed in, and then be buzzed in a second door. Obviously, once you get checked in and get a key, you can freely let yourself in and out. But, wow. This neighborhood! It is not somewhere I would walk alone or at night AT ALL. There are homeless everywhere, and they are actively doing drugs in the middle of the sidewalk, even in broad daylight. This is not a good location despite the close walking distance to ByWater Market and the other attractions. Which is a pity for the owner because she was so incredible! The hospitality really can’t be beat here. I really hope the city cleans it up around there for the hotel’s sake.
What a wonderful place to stay in downtown Ottawa. The room was large, clean, comfortable and had everything we needed.
The staff and the owner Sabina were wonderful. We had to stay an extra night than planned and Sabina made that so simple. The complimentary coffee in the morning was lovely. It’s so close to the Rideau Centre, Parliament and Byward Market.
Nice unique place, friendly staff. Bed was too soft for my liking. Major problem is location, not the hotels fault But it has a major impact on your trip. It is right in the middle of Ottawa’s major un housed and IV drug problem. On first walk to market, saw people shooting up three different times, and tens of people passed out on the street. Uber back to be safe, left the next morning after a sleepless night listening to them yell at each other, even though we paid for two more days.
Attended here for a conference. Staff was good but very new. Some details were missed. Was offered a complementary mocktail and sweets in my room. No one checked if tray was even clean before putting items.
Room was spacious and well maintained. Room for meeting didn’t have best set up, staff kept coming to try to help and fix items.
Location is way to far to get to. Really good location if you are attending a hockey game or Tanger.
Biggest gripe if freshness of food, beverages. Day old coffee in dispenser.
Great hotel but what a scam, I had a reservation for an upcoming event but they have advised that they require you to stay 2 nights because of “forecasted demand”, their words. So they would rather me cancel and go elsewhere.. which I did.. then take my money for one night, that’s a solid way to lose business. That is corporate greed at its finest This was the Wingate by Wyndham Kanata
Very happy with our stay at this hotel. This new property was clean, had great amenities and breakfast. Only issue was wanted to request a late check out plus had a few other questions, but there was not a manager or colleague on duty that was empowered to make decision which was disappointing. This was 9pm at night on Saturday and when I went to the front desk at 8am the next day there was not anyone either. Other than this it was a great stay.
Great Hotel close to an outlet mall and lots of restaurants in the area. I was there on business for two days and Kanata was central to all me meetings. Staff were very friendly.
There initially was a dispute over my booking and I was charged a no show fee of $250.00. Once i was back home I called them to request a credit (I was willing to pay half). They were very prompt in looking in to the matter and credited the whole amount back. Thank you Dora for your assistance with this.
Overall experience was great. Breakfast is good , Pool and hot tub is good and service is excellent. All staff is accommodating. We spent 2 days here with family and it was enjoyable. Near to highway and besides Tanger outlets.
I like this hotel for family stay: fast check in, clean room & comfortable beds. Location is great: 20-30 minutes from downtown, there are a lot of restaurants closed by, outlets just 5 minutes away. Breakfast is ok: standard hotel breakfast with egg’s & sausage. We stayed at the hotel for 3 days, nobody clean the room during our stay…
Overall great experience both times that I have been here.
Today though both my key cards stopped working went downstairs to get them re activated. Customer service was lacking. Should have been a little more considerate to the situation.
Breakfast was okay. I’m guessing powered eggs. Sausages were cold. But hey its included.
Great location, free parking that a plus.
